True Work: Doing What You Love and Loving What You Do

Additional Information

If we could find a way to transform how we view what we do so that it  becomes a source of enjoyment and refreshment, it would be a cause for  celebration. And indeed, this is exactly what New Dimensions Radio  co-founders Michael and Justine Toms provide in their widely acclaimed  book.

According to the Toms, the bottom line is: "Has our compassion  grown with our business? Has our wisdom expanded with our budget? And  has our laughter increased with our staff?" True Work  looks at work as service and as a spiritually sustaining activity that  promotes healing at all levels. It is brimful with stories and helpful  techniques culled from their more than three decades of broadcast  interviews and their personal experience.

What others say about the book True Work "Right Livelihood is one of the basic  constituents of the path to enlightenment. Michael and Justine Toms have  done a great service in helping us understand the nature of true work  and its place in a conscious life. This is a thoughtful book and a  useful one." -- Andrew Weil, M.D., author of Spontaneous Healing "Michael and Justine Willis Toms are people of enormous heart and imagination, and their work has helped millions." -- Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul "A remarkable guidebook—imaginative yet  practical—on bringing mindfulness and compassion to the workplace and  into everyday life." -- Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying "A wise, honest, insightful, funny, practical,  and immensely readable boo—nourishing and helpful to everyone, but must  reading for anyone struggling with work or career." -- Belleruth Naparstek, author of Invisible Heroes: Survivors of Trauma and How They Heal and of the Health Journeys Guided Imagery Audio Series "We each yearn to find our true work. Justine and  Michael have a deep appreciation of what gets in the way and how we can  persevere into that unfamiliar territory where our work awakens and  enlivens us on a daily basis." -- Charles Garfield, author of Peak Performers "In a world of how-to books on everything from  career-building to investment management and retirement planning, there  is precious little written about the deeper meaning of work in our  lives. Now comes an inspiring, liberating, and useful book from the rich  minds and generous spirits of Justine and Michael Toms." -- James Autry, author of The Servant Leader: How to Build a Creative Team, Develop Great Morale, and Improve Bottom-Line Performance "This warm and wise book instructs, inspires, and  reminds us that work at its best is a vocation, a calling to bring  forth our gifts in the context of the community in which we work and  serve." -- Joan Borysenko, author of Your Soul's Compass: What Is Spiritual Guidance? "Justine and Michael Toms write about what they  practice deeply and lovingly—lifting the tasks of everyday life to exalt  our hearts and spirit. For all of us who falter on the path, their work  shines out as a brilliant guid." -- Paul Hawken, author of Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming "This book does something extraordinary. It  propels the reader toward new ways of being and working in the world of  the new millennium." -- Jean Houston, author of Jump Time: Shaping Your Future in a World of Radical Change

TRUE WORK: Doing What You Love and Loving What You Do Part I
To actually be paid for doing what you love would be a dream come true.   But how do you discover your passion?  And how do you find a way to  bring that spirit into the workplace?  Justine and Michael Toms,  co-founders of New Dimensions Radio and New Dimensions Broadcasting  Network, are living proof that it can be done.  In this dynamic dialogue  they talk about how to discover your passion, cope with a toxic work  environment and move with "radical trust."  As Michael says, "Creativity  comes out of chaos.  When the hardest lessons and most difficult  experiences are in front of us, that's where the gold is, that's where  the real nitty-gritty of your own authenticity lies." Discover ways to  find your passion and bring it alive in work and play. Remember, "This  is not a galactic penal colony--life is meant to be fun."

Topics explored in this dialogue include:

  • How to discover your passion
  • How to cope with a toxic work environment
  • Four ways to expand time
  • Developing “radical trust”
  • Being realistic and living your dreams
  • Taking charge of the direction of your life
  • How to balance work and play
  • Letting go of approval from authority
  • How New Dimensions was created, one small step at a time
  • How to create your own “True Work” circle

TRUE WORK: Doing What You Love and Loving What You Do Part II
Here is Part II of an evocative interview aimed at finding our true  passion and integrating it into our life, both on and off the job. It's  about finding joy, taking initiative and making the jump. But before you  leap, Justine says, "There is an art to choosing well. It involves  moving from your own authenticity as well as seeking the alignment and  cooperation of others, because none of us works in a vacuum. Remember  that the soul is seeking qualities, not things." The Toms have faced  many challenges in the twenty-five years of the continual evolution of  New Dimensions, both personal and professional. They have learned to  never give up the dream, but "hold the future loosely" as life has a way  of surprising us with the outcome.

Topics explored in this dialogue include:

  • Four sure-fire ways to deal with setbacks
  • How to discover your own authenticity
  • What to do when worry wakes you up in the middle of the night
  • Being inner-directed rather than outer-directed
  • A new perspective on money
  • The importance of True Work Circles

True Work

By Michael and Justine Willis Toms
Work and life are inextricably connected because both are driven by  spirit. Work can become our spiritual practice because it can intinually  provide opportunities to deepen and enrich our lives. Work is more than  a job to make money or to achieve some goal, although it can encompass  both these aims.

Ask yourself, "To what do I most yearn to give my full energy and  commitment?" The answer will open you to the territory of your soul's  longings.

If you don't have a clear answer to the question, it will emerge when  the time is right and you are ready. Sometimes we require experience,  adventures, and challenges to prepare us for the work we are to do.  Trust the process of life and your higher purpose will gradually make  itself known to you.

Remain positive and optimistic if you don't feel you have found your  calling in life. How we approach life is governed by our attitude and  perspective. If our outlook is negative, focused on what doesn't work,  then it will be that much more difficult to discover and live our  passion.
